Vertigo is an ambiguous word. It refers to a loss of bearings. In this sense, the state of the world on the brink of the abyss makes us feel dizzy every morning when we listen to the news. It is a physical sensation of falling, of the ground giving way beneath our feet. It takes our breath away. It is also a flight, an intoxication, a mad desire that nothing can dispel, the vertigo of love. To experience vertigo, you have to be high up, keep your feet on the ground, and not close your eyes. It is the sickness of heights, the intimate dizziness of solitude felt even in the heart of a celebrating crowd.
